The Greatest CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL?

Jonathan King v Neil MacRae

The following Gallery of around 60 were treated to a unbelievable display of golf by two terrific players. The old saying ‘I’m sorry there had to be a loser’ was on everyone’s lips by the end.

Jonny a seven times Champion going for a record eighth and Neil for ‘just’ his fourth.

In the morning round Jonny was 3UP playing the 13th. Neil birdied it and then four of the last five holes to go in for lunch 1UP. Haddock for Jonny and Omelette for Neil, being Athletes they passed on the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Round 2 -‘ding-ding’ - Jonny birdies the first. Neil sinks a 15 footer at the second then birdies the 3rd (Neil 2UP). Jonny birdies 6th then eagles 8th (a/s) - Neil birdies the 9th - Neil 1UP at the turn. 2DN playing the 13th - Jonny rolled in his 8ft putt for his second eagle. At the 15th both had birdie putts. Jonny’s 20 footer pulled up agonisingly inches short and then Neil rolled in his slippery 12ft downhiller - Neil 2UP. Two halves in 3 at 16. The 17th - Neil laid up with an iron off the tee then wedge in hand - adrenaline aided, went long and left, running into the bunker. Jonny drove short of the green and chipped to 8ft. Neil’s bunker shot ran 15ft past. Cool as you like he stroked it in - over to you Jonny.

Sadly for Jonny, his birdie putt slipped bye and sadly for us, the exhibition of golf at the very highest level was over. Congratulations to Neil, stepping off the Rollercoaster ride as the victor. Both just 63 shots for the 17 holes played.

Two tremendous golfers and Gentlemen in the true sense of the word, we are privileged to have them playing amongst us at GGC.

For the lucky ones who were witnesses - A final that will be etched on the memory for ever.
